So you have a form of arthritis and you have heard the term Polyarthritis but what exactly is it? It is actually any type of arthritis that typically involves five or more joints. If you have only two or three joints that are inflamed, it is called oligoarthritis.
-
Polyarthritis is usually due to an auto-immune disorder such as Lupus
, Psoriatic arthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis, and but it can also come from infections like the Ross River Virus. If you suffer with this type of arthritis, it may be helpful for you to sleep on a firm mattress and make sure you use a flat pillow. Don’t be fooled into thinking that this can only hit you if you are older. Polyarthritis can affect anyone of any age and can affect either sex.
There are different types of treatments that are available for all types of arthritis. Below is a basic overview to give you an idea of what your options are.
-
Local therapy: this is where you can rub cooling gels and creams
in the area of the joints where you have the pain and swelling to help relieve these symptoms. This may also be combined with drug therapy for maximum relief.
-
Drug therapy: Your doctor may try a combination of anti-inflammatory and/or pain medications. Sometimes steroids can also be very helpful to get control of the inflammation.
-
Nutritional changes: Sometimes by reducing the amount of animal proteins you intake as well as other items such as alcohol, coffee, tea, sugar and nicotine can help with the symptoms. Also be sure to keep your weight under control to help relieve some of the pressure on the joints.
-
Surgery: Sometimes it may be necessary to intervene with surgery to correct misalignments, possible do an artificial joint replacement or maybe even to stiffen the smaller joints to help with stability.
